Ambition Magazine: Who are the visionaries/creators of Progressive Greek?
Kevin Davis: myself
AM: When was Progressive Greek founded?
KD: January 9, 2010 is when the website and all social media went live.
AM: What was the launch date?
KD: June 2011 is when the 1st issue debuted.
AM: What inspired you to start your own business?
KD: I’ve always been a big magazine reader (INC., Black Enterprise, Ebony & Jet). There was nothing that highlights the lives and accomplishments of those black Greek organizations. Why don’t we celebrate ourselves and the attention dies after graduating from college. A story needs to be told about what we are doing in our communities and professional lives. A vehicle to remain active and engaged.
AM: What were some of the struggles during start up
KD: Developing a feasible, realistic timeline! Also not knowing and having any experience in setting up a magazine. Finding talent and having a reliable team. It was when I showed everyone that I could create the magazine by myself that I really developed a solid team.
AM: What was easy
KD: Passion! I was always very active in Greek life, so it was a smooth transition.
AM: What was fun
KD: Design and layout of the magazine. Showing team and seeing their excitement grow for the debut of the issue.
AM: What are your goals for the future and expansion
KD: Getting 4 issues out and add in some more events into the mix of the magazine and community initiatives. Two initiatives are going to be mentoring and Progressive Greek University. Progressive Greek University will offer – leadership institutes, financial literacy, professionally, organizational.
AM: Advice for other aspiring entrepreneurs
KD: Find a mentor – someone who knows the industry, effective leader. You have to plan things out!!!!! Perfect, fine tune!
There needs to be more publications by people of color! There is definitely an audience for it but we just don’t go after it.
